The browser plugin

Our approach relies on a browser component capable of playing RTP streams. At the time of design the VLC browser plugin seemed a good choice given its diffusion an well-known robustness.
Unfortunately, all the major browsers decided to drop the support for the NPAPI plugins (the standard extension plugin which VLC used to be written for), so in order to enable it back a kind of hack is necessary.

Install the plugin

  • Ubuntu platforms:
     sudo apt install browser-plugin-vlc

To enable the VLC plugin back in Firefox (tested on version 53.0.3), open the "aboug:config" tab and insert manually this entry:

plugin.load_flash_only = false
